A car accident can leave you sore, shaken and unsure what to do next. If you were hurt in a crash in Vancouver, or you are still feeling it weeks later, this page explains how we look after people at Jassal Chiropractic, what a first visit involves, and how to get started.

Chiropractic Care After a Car Accident in Vancouver

Most people who come to us after a crash were not in a dramatic collision. They were rear-ended at a light on Main Street or Broadway, caught in stop-and-go traffic on Kingsway or the Knight Street Bridge, or hit in a parking lot at low speed. The car may have looked fine. Their neck, upper back or head did not feel fine a day or two later.

At our Main Street clinic, Dr. Jassal and our team start by listening to what happened and what you have noticed since. Then we look carefully at how your spine and nervous system are working. Our care is gentle and specific, and it is built around your body, not around a template.

What Happens to the Body in a Crash

In a rear-end collision the car is pushed forward in an instant, and your body goes with it. Your head does not move at the same moment. It snaps back and then forward. The neck, the muscles around it, the ligaments and the small joints of the spine take that load in a fraction of a second. This is the motion people call whiplash.

The same thing can happen in a side impact or a head-on crash, and a seat belt that did its job can still leave bruising and soreness across the shoulder and chest. You do not need to have hit anything to be affected. The sudden movement alone is enough to strain soft tissue and to irritate the joints and nerves of the neck and upper back.

Think of it like a guitar string pulled hard and let go. The string is still there, but the tension is off, and everything connected to it feels it.

Whiplash and Soft-Tissue Injury

Whiplash is a soft-tissue injury. That means muscles, ligaments and tendons, along with the joints they move. Soft-tissue injuries can be hard to see on imaging.

After a crash, people tell us about things like:

  • Neck pain and stiffness, or trouble turning to check a blind spot
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Pain or tightness between the shoulder blades and across the shoulders
  • Low back pain
  • Dizziness, fatigue, or trouble concentrating
  • Poor sleep because no position feels comfortable

These are things people report. They are not a diagnosis, and they can have more than one cause. That is why we start with a proper assessment instead of guessing.

Symptoms That Show Up Days or Weeks Later

Adrenaline can cover a lot in the first hours after a crash. It is common to feel mostly okay on the day and notice stiffness, headaches or soreness a day, a few days, or even a few weeks afterward. If that is you, you are not imagining it, and you are not late.

It is also common for a person to feel better and still be moving differently than before, guarding one side or holding the neck a little stiffly. Our exam and scans are meant to pick up those patterns, even if you feel you are mostly back to normal.

If you lost consciousness, have numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, or have a severe headache after a crash, see a doctor first. We are glad to see you afterward, and we are happy to work alongside your family doctor.

How We Care for You

Our care focuses on the spine and the nervous system, because that is where the communication between your brain and your body travels. We are not trying to fix you from the outside. Think of a garden hose with a foot on it. Our job is to find where something may be getting in the way and take the foot off, and then give your body room to do what it already knows how to do.

We use the Torque Release Technique with an instrument called the Integrator. It delivers a light, quick impulse. There is no twisting and no cracking, which is a relief for many people who feel sore, guarded or nervous after a crash. If you are wondering whether adjustments are going to hurt, ask us before your visit and we will explain exactly what to expect.

What Your First Visit Looks Like

Your first visit is about understanding you. We want a clear picture before we do anything else.

  • A conversation. We ask about the accident, where you were hit, what you noticed first, what has changed since, and your health history.
  • A physical exam. We check posture, range of motion and how your spine is moving.
  • Neuro spinal scans. Our sEMG, thermal and heart rate variability scans record muscle activity, temperature and heart rate variability as a baseline to compare against later.
  • Posture pictures. These give us a starting point to compare against later.
  • X-rays, only if the doctor decides they are needed.

On your second visit we go through your findings and give you a written care plan, and your care begins.

How We Plan Care After a Crash

Your care plan is written down, so you know what we are aiming for and when we will check in. We reassess regularly, using your scans and posture pictures, so we are looking at what has changed in your body and not relying on how you feel on a given day. If something is outside what we can help with, we say so and point you to the right professional.

We cannot promise a result or a timeline, because every person and every crash is different. What we can promise is that you will know what we are doing and why.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon after a car accident should I get checked?

A: If you lost consciousness or have numbness, weakness or a severe headache, see a physician or go to the emergency department right away. If not, sooner is easier than later, because it helps us build a clear picture while the details are fresh. That said, many people come in weeks or months after a crash, and that is fine too.

Q: I feel okay. Do I still need to be seen?

A: Not everyone does. But stiffness, headaches and soreness often show up days or weeks later, so a no-pressure assessment can be worthwhile if you were in a crash and are unsure.

Q: Will the adjustments hurt?

A: Our instrument-based technique has no twisting or cracking. The instrument makes a clicking sound and feels like a quick impulse into the muscles along your spine. Tell us what is sore and we will work around it.

Q: Do I need an X-ray?

A: Only if the doctor decides it is needed. Not everyone does.

Q: How many visits will I need?

A: It depends on you. Your written care plan sets out phases, and we reassess along the way. We will not guess at a number before we have examined you.

Q: Can I bring my child if they were in the car too?

A: Yes. Pediatric care is a big part of our practice, and our pediatric adjustments are extremely gentle. Children who were hurt or frightened in a crash are welcome. See our pediatric chiropractic page.
